When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out–
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Although he knows nothing of the struggles I have been going through lately, My grandpa sent me this poem and I must say the timing was amazing. I cried the first time I read it, even more so when I read the note he had written on the back:
‘My own Beth, you have never been far from me because you are always in my prayers. I pray that you will be blessed with a good and happy life; you are always with me. Love your mum as she has loved her children. Have a long and happy life with (my husband) Lots and lots of love, Grandpa xxx’
Witten as part of National Poetry Month which was highlighted -and is being spurred on- by The Ranting Papizilla and Sahm; I have pledged to write at least one a week but many participants are doing one a day! so check out their posts and other poems here and here

Reblogged this on poemtherapyproject and commented:
The title says it all, “Don’t Quit.” No matter what…don’t give up. I really like this poem by “Unknown Author” and it took on even more meaning when I read what Comfortably Numb’s grandfather sent this poem to her.
